PROJECT HIP HOP with KID SISTER in the Loyolan :)
Concert to showcase hip-hop talent
By Nick Kemalyan on February 17, 2011
Big beats, dancing and interculturalism will all be on display tomorrow in St. Rob’s Auditorium for Project Hip-Hop, featuring Kid Sister.
The exclusive show for LMU students is co-sponsored by Mane Entertainment (ME), ASLMU, the Intercultural Student Advisory Committee and the Latino Business Student Association (LBSA).
“It’s an event for interculturalism because it’s all for charity,” said junior business major Linze Peters, ME signature events manager.
The main act will feature Kid Sister, a female rapper from Chicago, Ill. known for her down-to-earth lyrics. Kid Sister is also a protégé of Kanye West, who is featured on her hit single, “Pro Nails.”
“Kid Sister is, first of all, female, and a big reason we’re doing this is to show interculturalism,” Peters said. “Hip-hop is not just black and white. It’s not just male; it’s not just one singular thing. It’s a collection of multiple facets. It brings people together in multiple genres.”
In addition to Kid Sister’s performance, there will be LMU student performers, including Kuumba Beatz, Radix and B-boy Status.  Kuumba Beatz is a female hip-hop crew that’s affiliated with the Black Student Union. Radix is an inclusive student organization that shares with the student body the history of Asian Pacific culture through movement. B-boy Status is LMU’s co-ed hip-hop/breakdancing organization.
Additionally, junior business marketing major Ryan Chang will read poetry before Kid Sister performs.
Furthermore, other major LMU clubs and organizations will be in attendance, including the men’s basketball team, Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority Inc., Sisters in Solidarity, Harmony and Marians Service Organization, to name a few.
All of the proceeds from Project Hip-Hop will go directly to Project Knapsack, the main charity that works with the men’s basketball team. The charity has a penpal program and provides school supplies for children in Africa.
“Project Hip-Hop anticipates around 200 to 350 people to attend tomorrow’s event. The event was originally going to be covered by KTLA, but the University declined to have the news station on campus.
“I don’t know if the press was going to be too complicated, because we wanted to make it a student-only show,” Peters said. “I guess KTLA covering it was going to be too big or too big of a hassle.”
Project Hip-Hop begins at 7 p.m. in St. Rob’s Auditorium [TONIGHT]. Tickets are on sale for $5 and are available at the door- or in the Malone 105 office!
